An anniversary calculator says which anniversary a given date falls on, and what traditional gift goes with it. Give it the day it all started and the day you want to ask about; it counts the whole years between them and returns the milestone number, the anniversary date itself, the weekday that fell on, and how many days have passed since. The count is of completed years, so the twenty-fifth anniversary is reached on the day, not the day before. Both dates come from you, and neither of them is today.

Compiled from the British and American lists, and showing only the thirteen years on which the two agree. Both traditions name more years than this, especially in the first fifteen, and the names differ between them. Treat the list as a starting point for a gift rather than a rule about what to give.

Formula

anniversary number = whole years completed between the start date and the date you ask about; anniversary date = the start date advanced by that many years; days since = the asked-about date minus the anniversary date

startDate
The day the count begins: a wedding day, a first meeting, a founding date, the day someone started a job
targetDate
The day you want to ask about. It may be any date at or after the start date, including one in the future
anniversaryNumber
How many whole years have been completed by the target date; the fifth anniversary is reached on the fifth start-date anniversary itself
anniversaryDate
The date of that anniversary, which is the one number that has already arrived rather than the next one coming
anniversaryWeekday
The day of the week the anniversary fell on, for working out whether the celebration is on the day or the weekend beside it
daysSince
Days from the anniversary date to the date you asked about, so it reads 0 on the anniversary itself
totalDays
Every day from the start date to the date you asked about, counting the leap days in between

Use it for any annual occasion you count rather than celebrate on a fixed calendar date: a wedding anniversary, the anniversary of a first date, a work anniversary, the founding day of a business, or the anniversary date of someone's death. It is also the tool for looking a date up rather than forward, because it accepts a past date and tells you which number that day was. Use the birthday calculator when the month and day are what matter and the year of birth is incidental, and the wedding countdown calculator when the question is how long until the next one rather than how many have passed. Read the gift column knowing it is a custom, not a rule, and that the list differs between countries.

Worked examples

  1. Married 19 June 2020, asking about 15 January 2026

    1. 19 June 2020 to 19 June 2025 is five completed years, so the number is 5
    2. The sixth anniversary is not until 19 June 2026, which has not arrived, so 5 is the answer and not 6
    3. The anniversary date is therefore 19 June 2025, which fell on a Thursday
    4. 19 June 2025 to 15 January 2026 is 210 days
    5. 19 June 2020 to 15 January 2026 is 2036 days in total, including 29 February 2024

The fifth anniversary is the wood anniversary and the silver one is the twenty-fifth, so the badge names the year rather than leaving you to look it up. Note that the number counts what has been reached: the couple is in their sixth year, but the sixth anniversary has not happened.

  2. A 29 February wedding, asking about 15 January 2026

    1. 29 February 2024 to 15 January 2026 is one completed year, because the second 29 February has not arrived
    2. Advancing the start date by one year clamps to the end of February, so the first anniversary is 28 February 2025
    3. That day was a Friday
    4. 28 February 2025 to 15 January 2026 is 321 days
    5. 29 February 2024 to 15 January 2026 is 686 days

The clamp is the same choice the birthday calculator makes, and it is a choice rather than a fact: some countries legislate 1 March for anniversaries falling on 29 February in a common year. The leap day itself is why the total is 686 rather than 685.

Limitations

The gift list is a tradition rather than a standard, so it differs between countries and between publishers; this page shows only the thirteen milestones that the British and American lists agree on. The count is of whole years completed, so a twenty-fifth anniversary is reached on the date itself and not before it. A 29 February start date has its anniversary pinned to 28 February in common years, and some countries legislate 1 March instead. Nothing here reads today's date: both dates come from you.

Frequently asked questions

How do I work out which anniversary a date is?
Count the whole years between the start date and the date you are asking about. A couple married on 19 June 2020 have their fifth anniversary on 19 June 2025 and their sixth on 19 June 2026, so a date in between is the fifth. Only completed years count, which is the same rule a registry office uses.
What gift do you give for a silver wedding anniversary?
Silver, for the twenty-fifth. It is the best known of the milestone years after the golden one, and in most traditions it is marked with a party rather than a single gift. The table above lists all thirteen years the British and American lists agree on, from paper at the first to diamond at the sixtieth.
Is the anniversary gift list the same everywhere?
No, and that is worth knowing before buying anything. The British and American traditions overlap on thirteen years and disagree on the rest, and both name far more years in the first fifteen than most people realise. This page shows the thirteen they share rather than picking a side, and the note under the table says so.
What happens when the start date is 29 February?
The anniversary clamps to 28 February in common years, so a wedding on 29 February 2024 has its first anniversary on 28 February 2025. Some countries legislate 1 March instead, and the choice matters for pension and benefit rules that turn on an anniversary date. Nothing in the arithmetic picks one for you.
Can I use it for something other than a wedding anniversary?
Yes, since the arithmetic never looks at what the date means. Work anniversaries, the anniversary of a first date, a company's founding day and the anniversary of a death all count the same way. The gift column will be beside the point for most of those, but the number, the date and the weekday are not.
