How long is left until a date? This time until calculator answers in days, weeks, whole months and weekend days at the same time, and it also tells you which day of the week the target falls on. Today is read as a whole calendar day in UTC rather than as a moment, so the count is the same whether you open the page in the morning or at midnight, and it does not jump when daylight saving changes. A target that has already gone by is not an error: the same numbers come back negative.

Formula

days remaining = target date minus today, both treated as whole calendar days; weeks, months and weekend days are derived from the same span and share its sign

targetDate
The date you are counting towards; it can be in the past, which is how you count backwards
daysRemaining
The signed difference in days: positive until the date, zero on the day, negative after it
weeksRemaining
The same distance divided by seven, to one decimal place
monthsRemaining
The whole months inside that span; 351 days is 11 months, because the twelfth is 14 days short
weekendsRemaining
How many Saturdays and Sundays fall in the span; a working-week arrival can halve this
fromDate
The day the count starts from, reported so the arithmetic can be checked

Use it for a deadline you are planning against: a visa expiry, a launch, a handover, a holiday, a subscription renewal. Days are what you act on, weeks are what you schedule in, months are how the term is written down, and weekend days are how much of it you can actually spend on preparation. The date it counts from is printed next to the numbers, because a countdown is only checkable if you can see what today was taken to be. What it cannot give you is hours or minutes — the anchor is a whole day, so an hourly figure would only be the day count multiplied by 24.

Worked examples

  1. 1 January 2027, counted from 15 January 2026

    1. 15 January 2026 to 15 January 2027 is a full year, and 2026 is not a leap year, so that span is 365 days
    2. The target is 1 January 2027, which is 14 days earlier — so 365 minus 14 gives 351 days
    3. 351 divided by seven is 50.14, which rounds to 50.1 weeks
    4. Eleven whole months take you to 15 December 2026; the twelfth month would need 14 more days
    5. 100 of those days are Saturdays or Sundays, and 1 January 2027 is a Friday

Months and days disagree here on purpose: eleven months and 351 days describe the same span, and neither is wrong. Read months for the term and days for the deadline.

  2. Tomorrow — 16 January 2026

    1. One day ahead, so days remaining is 1
    2. A seventh of a week rounds to 0.1 weeks
    3. Zero whole months, because 16 January does not complete a month that started on a month boundary
    4. Neither day is a weekend day: 15 January 2026 is a Thursday and 16 January is a Friday
    5. The target weekday is 5, counting Sunday as 0

The months figure reading zero for a target one day away is not a bug — a whole month has to finish before it counts. That is exactly why the days figure is the one shown largest.

  3. 25 December 2025, already behind us

    1. 25 December 2025 is 21 days before 15 January 2026, so days remaining is minus 21
    2. Minus 21 divided by seven is exactly minus 3 weeks
    3. Six of those 21 days are Saturdays or Sundays: 27 and 28 December, 3 and 4 January, 10 and 11 January
    4. That gives minus 6 weekend days — the sign carries through every derived figure, not just the day count
    5. Whole months is 0: 25 December to 15 January is 21 days, and the month that started on 25 December has not completed

A past date returns numbers rather than an error, and all four figures share one sign. A tool that took absolute values would make yesterday and tomorrow look identical.

Limitations

Today is taken as the UTC calendar day, not your local one. For most of the world that is invisible, but east of about UTC+12 the UTC date is still the previous day for the first hours after local midnight, so a countdown can read one day more than the calendar on your wall early in the morning. The anchor is a whole day in any case, so hours and minutes are out of scope. Weekend days are Saturdays and Sundays only, which is wrong for countries whose weekend is Friday and Saturday. The month figure counts whole months, so a target a few days away reports zero months even though it is nearly one; and because the count is anchored on today, the page recalculates when it loads in the browser rather than being frozen at the moment the site was built.

Frequently asked questions

How many days until 1 January 2027?
351 days from 15 January 2026, which is 50.1 weeks or 11 whole months. The year between 15 January 2026 and 15 January 2027 is 365 days, and 1 January 2027 falls 14 days before that. Count it yourself by checking that the page reports its starting day — 15 January 2026 — next to the numbers.
Why is the days count different on my phone?
Because the page recalculates from the clock in your browser once it loads, while the first version you see was worked out when the site was built. Today is read as a whole UTC calendar day, so the two can also differ by a day in the hours after midnight in time zones well ahead of UTC — around UTC+12 and beyond.
Can I count backwards from a past date?
Yes, and it does not need a switch. Enter a date that has already gone by and every figure turns negative: 25 December 2025 is minus 21 days from 15 January 2026. Days, weeks and weekend days all carry the same sign, so a past date can never be mistaken for a future one.
Why does the weekends remaining figure matter?
Because weekend days are the ones most people can actually spend. A 351-day span holds 100 of them, so a deadline that looks generous in days is far tighter if the work can only happen on Saturdays and Sundays. Moving a target by a single day changes the figure by 0 or 1, so the number is worth re-reading whenever the date moves.
How does this differ from a days between dates calculator?
This one counts from today, which you do not enter, and it gives weeks, months and weekend days as well as days. A days between dates calculator takes both ends from you and is the right tool when the interval is fixed and unrelated to now — a contract term, a project window, or a countdown to a date you are comparing with another.
